The Transikarian Trail (Atheras Trail)

For advanced / experienced hikers, there is a new cross- island route on Ikaria called the “Transikarian Trail”.
The local mountaineering club of Ikaria has been working passionately and meticulously to mark the whole route with other Greeks and foreigner volunteers. Although the hike is not completely signposted and a few points (some mountain passes) remain exposed and with risk to cross, the trail can be walked to a large extent. For anyone curious to see this ‘work of art’ please check out the map below.

The Transikarian trail offers a unique chance to experience panoramic views across the whole island and beyond - from East to West or vice versa. In the link below you can find a google map with high level of detail as well as important and useful trail pins such as water, warnings, panorama views and more.

Ikarians themselves stress the fact that the island’s comparative advantage is that it’s not swept away by mass consumer tourism. Ikaria is gradually transforming into a top hiking destination in the Mediterranean! If you might want to learn more about any part of the trail, you can contact the local hiking club at https://www.facebook.com/OPSIkarias2008/
(We don’t recommend you attempt this trail without linking up with experienced locals.)
